African, French. The first thing that struck me was how extensive the menu is, so I solicited the highly hospitable waitperson for guidance. It’s not every day I experience African cuisine (or any day, at least up until now). Yet after a meal that superlative, it would be foolish not to make this a habit! I imagine I’ve had chicken wings hundreds of times. But not from Dakar and never with pineapple sauce. The flavor and texture so uniquely compelling, it’s clear why they don’t send out the blue cheese. Next, I indulged in octopus (again a preparation unfamiliar and intriguing). Grilled with green risotto, shaved parmesan cheese and truffle glazed, it’s an unbelievable combination that left a purely indelible impression. Their traditional Senegalese chicken dish is Le Poulet Yassa. It is served with rice, vegetables and enough flavor to fill a soccer stadium. I then discovered Niokolokoba. That’s grilled sirloin marinated with Senegalese spices, accompanied by fries and an au poivre (pepper) sauce. It made me an instant fan as did their perfect sundae (vanilla ice cream, walnuts, fresh berries, whipped cream, chocolate sauce). Novel does not guarantee delicious. Unless you come to Ponty Bistro, in which case it’s a done deal.
